Anybody have any tips for self-portrait work? - entry level slr tripod

I am making is relatively new in photography and I think that working a little too self-portrait. I work with an entry-level D-SLR cameras and a tripod on the road, but have no access to the studio lighting. I hope I do not ask impertinent, but if I have a portrait of himself with this kit, what would you do?
